Every long job has somebody who is not on the contract, not on the drawings, and there every time you look up. On Leslie House that was John.

From the build team
John is Leslie's someone. It felt like family — on top of it, always present, very attentive.
We believe he could be family, or a very good friend. Either way, definitely a great person to have around.
Academia Development Corp — general contractor
The one with no reason to be there.
He held no contract on this job. He drew none of it, priced none of it, and carried no scope. He turned up anyway, through the shell and the steel and the long finishing months, and he was there often enough that his absence would have been the thing people noticed.
What he did was the oldest job on a building site and the one nobody writes down: he looked at it. A person who has seen enough work go up knows when a thing is off before he can tell you why, and saying so early is worth more than saying it correctly later. Owner-builders carry every decision themselves. Having somebody in the room with no stake in the answer is not a small thing.
He is on this site because leaving him off it would have been a false account of how the house got built.
